Ultimate Solutions joins the International Coastal Cleanup 2023

A group of volunteers, made up of Ultimate Solutions employees, family, and friends, joined the 2023 International Coastal Cleanup at Chatarra Beach in Loíza, Puerto Rico. About 1,228 pounds of trash were collected in the area.

This work was in collaboration with the Scuba Dogs Society (SDS), which every year organizes volunteers and captains on the Island to join the effort from more than 100 countries.

The cleanup was carried out in 161 beach areas, 12 rivers and three lakes in Puerto Rico. SDS explained that this year they wanted to educate about the importance of impacting not only the beaches, but also the rivers and lakes, involving municipalities in the interior of Puerto Rico because “what happens in the mountains reaches the sea,” said the executive director of SDS, Karem Pérez González, in a previous interview.

The captain of the Ultimate Solutions group, Lyanne Riera, spoke to the volunteers about the new Law 51, which as of June 1, 2024, prohibits the use, sale and distribution of single-use plastics in Puerto Rico due to the serious damage they cause to ecosystems and species.

All the waste information that was collected was entered into the Clean Swell application that will allow documentation and quantification for future studies and public policy in different countries. In recent years, the waste that has been detected most in the International Coastal Cleanup in Puerto Rico is single-use plastics such as cutlery, glasses, plates, straws and “styrofoam” containers.
