Volunteers remove about 1,000 pounds of trash from the PR coast

Ultimate Solutions participated for the second consecutive year in the International Coastal Cleanup, removing approximately 1,146 pounds of trash that will not reach the water bodies of Puerto Rico.

The group of 68 volunteers cleaned the coastal area of Playa Chatarra in Loíza on September 21, 2024. The event was held in collaboration with the Scuba Dogs Society organization.

This global effort, which seeks to protect Puerto Rico’s bodies of water, focused this year on the fight against single-use plastics, the most common waste on our coasts. Data from recent years shows that six out of 10 wastes found in all cleanups is derived from plastics, including cigarette butts, which also have derivatives.

In total, 186 coasts were cleaned, led by 192 captains who guided the volunteers in collecting and taking data on the trash found.

At the beginning of the event, participants were oriented about Law 51 of 2022, which prohibits the use and sale of single-use plastics as a measure to avoid their environmental and public health impact. This measure came into force on July 1 of this year.
